I love that the main crux of this movie is:
“We can travel back in time and remove Godzilla from existence”
“Oh King Ghidorah has taken his place”
“No big deal we’ll just revive Godzilla again”
“Oh fuck now Godzilla is back bigger, more destructive, and even more pissed than usual”
“Ahh go to the future and revive Ghidorah but now make it so he’s awesome and metal and can be piloted like a gundam”
I think this is genuinely one of the most entertaining movies in the series. The high concept time travel story is really fun, the idea that Godzilla was once just a dinosaur that happened to survive on an island and inadvertently saved a bunch of Japanese soldiers by the American soldiers pissing off the dinosaur first. I love that because of this event that commander now thinks he has some sort of bond with Godzilla (he doesn’t btw he just thinks he does which leads to one of the best scenes in the franchise I won’t spoil that because it’s perfect). The only two major complaints are that because of such a high concept like time travel there’s always little things that get kind of over looked that bother me. Like when they travel back to 1944 to get rid of the dinosaur they take 3 people from 1992 with them. Those people being aware of Godzilla and then getting rid of him and being aware of a past that no longer should in theory exist I get and am fine with, but the greater world at large should now have a new memory of Godzilla never existing since we’ve entered a new timeline now but no, everyone remembers Godzilla existed and actually the moment he disappeared Ghidorah took his place and that’s just odd to me because now there’s like three other movies in this timeline that happened with Godzilla and in theory shouldn’t have. It’s a small thing that leads to a rabbit hole that I wish wasn’t there, it wouldn’t even be there if they just mentioned once that the general public has no memory of a “Godzilla” ever existing only ever the terror of Ghidorah or something. The other thing that bothers me is the android character he’s always kind of bothered me. He acts too human but too much like a really weird and bizarre human and not robotic at all. Maybe it’s because I want a Data performance out of him but Brett Spiner he is not. The effect of him running really fast is also kind of embarrassing. Just him slowly waving his arms around while the green screened background or rear projected background is zipping past always looks dumb to me. Beyond those two complaints though this is a really fun one, the time travel shenanigans don’t really matter if you just don’t think about them and I mean it’s a later Godzilla film are you really thinking anyways? I think this is a very fun movie and still a great movie In this series run. There has yet to be a Godzilla vs Gigan in this series where the movie is fun but kind of a slog or an All Monsters Attack where it’s just actually irredeemable. Overall good fun movie, I do enjoy this one.
