It's interesting to see a revered director's earlier projects. Sometimes, they come right out of the gate blasting, their singular style intact (Orson Welles being the most famous example). Most of the time, it's like stumbling upon a person who wants to speak but has no mouth. They have something to say, but just can't say it... yet.
I was surprised at how much of The Substance is taken from this film, but it didn't feel unique to Fargeat. It felt more like a student film, all sappy and rough around the edges.
All in all, It's... ok. Serves as an interesting peek into an artists process than a fully realized idea.
