Me watching this.This is one of my mom's favorite movies. For the most part, our tastes align around movies like this (we both liked 'Across The Universe'. I love The Beatles, and I have spent the past few weeks leading up to the 'A Hard Day's Night' screening revisiting their music and watching their movies. I enjoyed movies like 'Help!' or 'Yellow Submarine' and other music films like 'Pink Floyd-The Wall'. I enjoy dumb things, and the first ten minutes of this movie were fun. After that 10 minutes concluded, I began to feel myself sinking further into my chair, realizing that this was going to be a hard sit. The appreciation wears off fast, andwhat I was left with was an empty, irritating, and lifeless experience. As the movie was going on, I was thinking about why I like 'Across the Universe'. It is a flawed movie, and the characters are pretty wooden, but Julie Taymor actually manifested something with those songs. The visual flair was amazing and fit with the songs well. They managed to accompany the story interestingly while, for the most part, feeling shoehorned in. The music here feels like an obligation, not even attempting to add anything visually creative. The musical sequences in this movie are slogs, and luckily, 99% of the movie is a musical number. Most of them, aside from the Aerosmith cover of 'Come Together', are muddled and uninteresting. Reading afterwards, I saw that the Bee Gees didn't want to do this, and you can tell. Nobody here feels like they want to do this, besides probably a bizarre Steve Martin. It's weird for weird's sake, and it presents shallow commentary about the music industry before swiftly abandoning it. It never holds on to a concept and instead does whatever it feels like. There are outrageous things here, like all of the lasers, singing robots that look like they are in blackface, and 1984-esque imagery, but it's of service. The pacing is awful, the characters are cutouts, and the movie goes on way longer than it has any right to. I could only imagine sitting in the same room as one of the Beatles watching this movie unfold; it would have been more interesting.
