There were five Marines and one Navy Corpsman photographed raising the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi by Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945. This is the story of three of the six surviving servicemen - John 'Doc' Bradley, Pvt. Rene Gagnon and Pvt. Ira Hayes - who fought in the battle to take Iwo Jima from the Japanese.

Call him drunken Ira Hayes He won't answer anymore Not the whiskey drinking Indian Or the marine that went to war Yeah, call him drunken Ira Hayes But his land is just as dry And his ghost is lying thirsty In the ditch where Ira died

i really really enjoyed this. the focus on loss instead of victory made for a very powerful and emotional film. i would have liked to see a little bit more of the combat as the landing scene took the cake for the best scene in the movie. super well done and i can’t wait to watch letters from iwo jima
