I wasn’t really a fan of this one. The robot relationship never felt earned, mostly because there’s barely any real character development or dialogue to leave a lasting impression. Andrew Garfield was a pleasant surprise though!

Super cliche sappy love story but I honestly couldn’t care less. The short’s heartfelt and sincere enough to overlook all of that. It just really met my spirit at the right time and felt like a warm hug but also a crushing weight on your shoulder at the same time. The realities of love essentially and the things it makes you do. Robots work perfectly for this - someone willing to trade a literal arm and leg for you just because they love you that much. It’s a classic trope of sacrificing for the greater good of love and drama, but how can it not hit the spot?

To me it’s the ultimate show of your appreciation and compassion for that person. An unwavering loyalty and willingness to sacrifice valuables because you care about them more than anything else in the world. It’s an over-idealized version of love in the midst of our human form, but one we can only hope to find out of being humans desperate for connection. I know I am in particular. I’ve never truly felt like I’ve had a companion friend or someone who’s truly stuck by my side, leaving my feeling isolated a lot of times in my own life.

Maybe this film is unrealistic, but to me it’s still a template for the type of love we should settle for and chase with our hearts longing for fulfillment. I know I desire and crave that love deeply to share with someone. And this film showed me exactly what that type of love looked like - cathartic, euphoric, tender, crushing and most importantly loyal and empathetic.
