I love the general premise of this film and I think it is executed in a very unique and artistic way. However, I found that much of the cinematography and pacing made it boring to watch at times. I feel like this film desired to say so much about the main character in the context of his Korean-American identity, socio-economic status, and sexual identity but in the mix of it, didn’t really end up saying that much. Maybe there is something deep I don’t understand about the film but ultimately, I love to see representation of queer Korean-Americans.

What a wonderful little movie. It’s absolutely a first film from a director but you can totally feel the extreme potential in Andrew Ahn. He tells such a personal story here with Spa Night. I actually don’t know if I’ve seen a queer movie tackle the subject from the perspective of a Korean individual. Seeing how the culture’s norms are challenged by someone coming out as gay was really interesting to see. It was also pretty sad to see how that shame in disappointing his parents manifested in the type of sexual experiences he would have with men. An incredibly solid directorial debut from Andrew Ahn. Also nice to see a queer film not centered around white queer people.
