After seeing only two of his short list of movies, Cristian Mungiu is one of the more interesting directors I’ve come across in quite a minute. This one’s not even close to being as good as 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, but that’s way too high of a bar already, and there’s still so much personality to admire here in terms of emotional intensity.
That other movie had the luxury of a tight-knit time frame and a subject so thoroughly explored over the course of its two hours. Graduation is a story that’s more worth discussing for the morality as opposed to how well it’s constructed. Some plot elements are predictable in ways, but it never took away my fascination with where these characters were gonna end up. The acting also makes this especially riveting with no weak links, and Mungiu is still a master at directing the handheld look and getting the most out of it. Nothing feels cheap here, emotions aren’t loud but still speak volumes, and this guy knows how to end a movie for sure. Worth checking out.
