A 4 star to be safe. Will gladly watch again. Before Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest, it seems as if Toni Erdmann showed Sandra Hüller's acting capabilities in this bizarre film that may just be a depressing drama disguised as a quirky comedy, adding a level of sophistication and depressive nature to this film where her dad dresses up as a mystical creature and crashes a spontaneous nudist party.
In almost every scene between Winifred (Toni) and Ine is a clash of foils. Not a bombastic clash but a clash that is meant to make the other laugh and feel better about themselves in a stressful situation and how, based off its ending, it isn't as simple as that. The ending is so fucking good and I have an idea of what it signifies and how it could relate to what I said about this being a depressing drama in disguise.
Hüller and Peter Simonischek have amazing chemistry and allow themselves to be restrained while also emoting heavy emotions throughout with their facial expressions and tone of voice. Scenes fly by and the ideas presented of finding a kind of happiness in your life is bittersweet and it should be. It doesn't hold back on some of the few bizarre scenes there are and they feel earnist and not irritating.
All of this is great, I just don't know how to feel about it's stature in my head right now.

en egentlig veldig fin film, trodde i starten at jeg ville like den mer, men syntes at den kunne vært mye kortere. Mista litt tålmodigheten etter hvert men fortsatt solid film
