God what do I even say about this movie I haven’t said before.
This movie upon this rewatch really does SUCH a fantastic job on setting up the two mermaid sisters in such a short amount of time. I think that both girls, silver and golden are shown to be two people who do want love and what makes them different is how they accept such on their own terms. The whole “this is like a darker version of the little mermaid” narrative I see this movie get , while humorous and understandably clickbaity, does bother me. as while yes, golden makes a huge sacrifice for love and ends up dying because of it, I think silvers choices and inclusion as a character acts not as a foil but sort of in tandem to that narrative. She takes risks that get her in trouble, but no matter what she stays true to what she needs to do as a mermaid. Silver tends to want to stay alongside other mermaids, eat people who cause her trouble. Where as Golden is willing to risk everything for a sense of normalcy and craves to belong amongst the humans. even at the wedding on the boat, she is emotional looking at not only the love she has lost BUT the life she could had lived, had things worked out.
This movie deconstructs so much in its timeframe. And while the plot is always shakey and confusing at times I will always sing its praises because when people complain about “elevated horror slop” movies like this exist, to prove that the movies we wished existed can exist. This movie having no fan community to stand on BOTHERS ME so much for that reason but whatever. Always a 10/10 movie no notes.
