I don’t know if i can articulate just why I think this movie is so good. Buñuel, even in a more modest output, still seems to shatter barriers and break rules. One thing that stood out to me is when Archibaldo mimics crushing a grasshopper. He stops just short of actually doing it. He’s semmingly turned a new leaf? But this is what I think is Buñuel’e pessimism of the bourgeoisie. Even if this artistocrat is “better,” he still views you as an insect beneath him.
It also helped to know this is considered comedic because i thought this was blatantly funny numerous times. That was another thing about this. The black comedy was tops. Like a precise nail on the head.

he’s written by a woman fr! 🥹😍😝
Edit: After thinking about it, Divorce Italian Style kinda does everything better than this, better cuck angle, better psycho, better murder plans, better cynicism and comedy
Also the fact that the actress that played Lavinia killed herself right after the production of this was completed and was cremated prior to the release makes the scene of the wax burning devastating.
