Highlighting one of the most innovative American directors, this film reveals the path traveled by the auteur from his small-town Texas roots to his warm reception on the awards circuit. Long before he directed Boyhood, Richard Linklater’s intense desire to create fueled his work outside the Hollywood system. Rather than leave Texas, he chose to collaborate with like-minded artists crafting modest, low-budget films in a DIY style. His ability to showcase realistic characters and tell honest stories was evident from his films, and others soon took notice of his raw talent.

Richard Linklater: Dream Is Destiny
I found this in the Before Sunset blu ray and this documentary is longer than the film itself. The most extensive special feature of the box set and I’m happy for delving into this.

First and foremost, I’ve watched only 5 Richard Linklater movies: the Before Trilogy (Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004), and Before Midnight (2013)), Boyhood (2014), and Hit man (2023). Therefore, the BTS of Dazed and Confused, Tape, School of Rock, and The Newton Boys didn’t really hit for me.

In addition to that, the documentary consists of everything I needed to know about Director Richard Linklater. His unconventional filmmaking skills, especially his encouragement to bring in ideas from actors, spawns originality and creativity. I can see some parallels between Richard Linklater and Wong Kar-Wai, which is RULE #1: DO NOT WORK WITH A STRICT SCRIPT!

Richard Linklater: Dream Is Destiny
Linklater is by far one of my favorite directors. I envy the way he tackles complicated story conventions such as time and plot and subverts viewers expectations, making  something truly spectacular in the process. This documentary really gave me an insight into his career that I didn’t have before, and I am glad I now have that knowledge.

I am so thankful for Richard Linklater. His films are awash with the sadness of the passage of time, but also the textural beauty of the human experience. Is real life not the same melancholy smile?
