❝I can come in anytime I want. And I can get you, anytime I want. But I'm not going to. Not until it's time. When you wish you're dead... that's when I'll come inside.❞

Everyone always talks about how good this film is, so when I first watched it and wasn't blown away, I thought that maybe I had missed something important in the film. On my second rewatch my opinion didn't change.
The plot had so much potential but was betrayed by the execution. With the way the film started by emphasising the sounds made by Maddie's cooking, I assumed that her deafness would be played into frequently throughout the film. However this was not the case and I think that the film would've been so much better if it had.
Another big gripe I had was that the man took off his mask. He went from someone scary to a random, average, incel-looking guy. I understand that one of the points of this is that anyone normal looking can also be dangerous, but his face reveal took the fear out of me.
We got too much information about Maddie's surroundings. For example, when her friend is killed in the beginning we see it happening from outside the house before going inside with Maddie. That scene would've worked so much better if we only saw everything happen from inside the house; it would've been a better jumpscare.
There was also too much of the man overall which prevented him from being a truly terrifying adversary. When Maddie was trying to find her friend's phone, we were shown exactly where the man was. It didn't build tension, because we know he's not near Maddie. If we had stayed with Maddie in her perspective, the tension would be so much higher since we wouldn't know where and how close he was, so his sudden appearance is even more frightening.
As far as acting goes, Kate Siegel did great as Maddie, but the rest of the cast were subpar. John Gallagher Jr could've done better if his character was properly written. I know that the other two characters die pretty quickly, but even during the short time they were on screen, they didn't bring much to the film.
Overall, this film was very disappointing and I wouldn't recommend it.
