was recommended this in a criterion instagram comment section ages ago and forgot about it but here we are i guess…don’t know why i picked this as my first makoto shinkai feature but it was definitely interesting? the story and writing didn’t wow me but it was sweet. the visuals though… considering what i KNOW shinkai did after this it was definitely something! background work was wonderful but character design and the robots were definitely not greatfeel like i committed a hate crime by not watching the rest of his filmography first i just needed something short guys

Makoto Shinkai’s weakest, but still a promise of good things to come. Narration instead of lip-syncing does feel like a pretty big crutch, here. It took him a while to learn how to draw faces, huh…
