“she’s gonna get so messed up, she won’t know what’s going on”
another deep cut horror, and this ones probably one of my favourite so far. a girl joins a sorority, and she most spend a night in this random building, they all pull a prank on her but what they don’t know is that the building is infested by whacky creatures. the final act is just starlight up great, it has unsettling and almost campy practical effects, and really memorable telekinetic corpses, it’s really claustrophobic with constant ghouls shooting lasers out their eyes. unlike many slashers, it differentiates itself by adding a really fun supernatural twist, it’s relatively nostalgia 80s post friday the 13th horror. this film also has a decent lead performance, as meg tilly lets you sympathise with her ad the convincing vulnerable protagonist with a bunch of girls at her throat. the sound is also really ominous, and even a little over the top at some points. one big reason this isn’t any higher for me is it’s just a really slow movie, which wastes its time on simple teenage rivalry and only leaving the last act really for anything of substance to actually happen. the acting is a little uneven with its teenage cast giving amateurish portrayals, but yeah that adds to the campy factor. some of the subplots seem unnecessary and pointless. this film was extremely limited by its budget, some effects seem dated and it’s got no explicit violence, only atmosphere. this actually was fun, but takes way too long to pick up.
