Makes a decent companion piece to Midnight Cowboy, since Last Summer also feels like the farewell to a foregone era of Hollywood. It’s a very bleak look at something quintessentially American, the stereotypical summer vacation, while also displaying a clear darkness of the time. 

The ending is one of the most disturbing and shocking things I’ve ever seen.

caught this on a whim because i heard of it as a “disturbing drama” which happens to take place right by where i live. wasn’t expecting much but it was great! very good performances especially from the actress playing rhoda who i found out was nominated by the academy for it. and apparently roger ebert gave it a perfect score, which idk abt that but i certainly get what he saw in it. the sinister combination of innocence and perverse cruelty that is too common during this stage of life is captured so well; most importantly we get a reminder that the “nice guy” is usually just as much a piece of shit as his friends
