Besides Imago, I haven't quite dived into Marathi cinema. So being my second Marathi film, I had no idea what to expect from Sairat. There was high praise for the film, but that doesn't necessarily translate to a good film for me.
Sairat revolves around a couple, Archana Patil (Rinku Rajguru) and Prashant Kale (Akash Thosar), both coming from different caste backgrounds, the former being an upper-caste while the latter belongs to a lower-caste family.
It's such a shame that caste usually gets ignored in films. It is a uniquely Indian issue and hence it is a shame that there are so few films based on it. Sairat perfectly interweaves caste into its narrative, to showcase how the age-old tradition has poisoned every fabric of the nation.
Besides caste, the film is also feministic in certain ways. Archana is not a passive figure in the romance. She takes initiatives in her relationship and is not afraid to fight for her boyfriend. It is a refreshing deviation from the norm, where something keeps happening to women rather than her taking a stand for herself.
I have no prior knowledge of the cast members. So it was a surprise for me that the central lead characters are portrayed by debutants. Their performance is way ahead of their experience, which allows the film to be heartfelt and tragic.
