A Fireman’s Ball in a small Czechoslovakian town, forms a comedic wider allegory for communism and political corruption.
The committee members, all elderly males, veer between leering over beauty pageant contestants, monitoring prize table pilfering and generally appearing to do the right thing.
I was admittedly distracted watching this one, viewing segments on the train and while in line for AEW Grand Slam, so I may have missed some of the nuance plus the first 20 minutes the subtitles were way off so I had to find a different version to watch.
Nonetheless there was plenty to enjoy here, particularly the ‘lights out’ opportunity to return correct wrongdoings which opens up a whole other level of negative optics for the committee.
