A good ‘ol fashoned American western, each character was fully developed even if they didn’t have a long screen time. I liked the journey from the south to north and the varying landscape shots in between. The pacing seemed a little fast they could’ve made a longer movie, making us feel the distance of the journey

I'm pulled between the kinder lack luster message but great visuals.

One the one hand its got cinematography that Roger Deakin would be proud of with an unflinching seriousness and brutality excellently acted by a great cast.

On the other hand, takes the whole 'people are racist due to a lack of exposure' approach which has been done to death and a very simple silly idea that is more fitting to a lighter hearted film like Green Book. The Native American characters are nothing more than a device to humanise the white characters who go from feeling nothing but hated, fear and loathing for these people, to accepting them and defending them from other yet enlightened white people. Achieved through nothing more than extended proximity.

You could argue this was a hearts of darkness inspired journey through the wild west where these soldiers meet a kind of karmic justice for their treatment of indigenous people. You could argue that this is a deep character study of a man who learns that the natives he's despised all his life are much the same as him, if not better. You could argue this was a movie about the toll that this conflict has taken on these soldiers has left them broken and unable to live with themselves. You could argue this was a good movie. But if you argued any of those points you'd be wrong. This was a mishmash of good ideas on paper and not one of them came full circle. This was nothing. Also too long.
