On paper, The Divide should be right up my alley. It’s dark, disturbing, nihilistic, set in a single location, and has unstable antagonists — all things I search far and wide for in a horror movie and in an apocalypse movie. But it’s just not all done right.
There are some plot points that are quite redundant, a few too many characters, and the overall story gets very sloppy and caught up in its own shock value, which comes off as a distraction at times. I am never someone who uses pacing as a complaint, but I am going to make an exception for The Divide, I found it very difficult to get through the first hour in particular, and there is absolutely no reason for this movie to be as long as it is for how little it really does. On top of that, it does a terrible job of communicating the passage of time.
However, I would like to point out that the acting in this movie was surprisingly good, even great at times, and was easily the biggest bright spot. Particularly from Milo Ventimiglia and Michael Ecklund as Josh and Bobby.
