Peter Weller's staggering lack of charisma notwithstanding, this is a fairly well-executed piece of 80s schlock exploitation with a killer Sam Elliott role and nice direction from action maestro Glickenhaus. Sure, you get the bad dialogue (mostly put into Weller's mouth) and off-color jokes at the expense of women and minorities, but the movie has a surprisingly even-handed (for its era) look at racism and police corruption. Of course, this is an action movie first; the four major set-pieces are all fantastically exciting and over-the-fucking top (Elliott hanging from a light pole was not on my pre-film bingo card), replete with majestic stunt work and squib-tastic shootouts. Also gotta give a shout-out to the sexy as hell Patricia Charbonneau, who deserved a way better career after her all-timer turn in Donna Deitch's legendary lesbian love story DESERT HEARTS. Her thankless role as Weller's ex brought much needed feminine energy to such a masculine flick. All in all, if you want a fun 80s action flick, you could do a lot worse than this one. I quite liked the proto-synthwave atmosphere as well.

For the keen-eyed, look for early roles from Harold Perrineau and Tom Mardirosian (Hill and Busmalis, respectively, from HBO'S OZ), and cameos from Paul Bartel and David Proval (warming up for his ironic role as Richie Aprile on THE SOPRANOS).
