I ACTUALLY CARED ABOUT THE HUMAN SIDE PLOT!!!
Technically I guess the monsters really are the side plot but the human story in these movies typically is people in rooms science jargoning their way through the narrative to get to the next monster fight. This one the humans are acting and I don’t mean that as in like they’re amazing actors lighting the screen on fire I mean that they are going to different places, riding on boats, sneaking into caves that hide an alien base, summoning a monster, deciphering a prophecy they’re doing shit and we almost never see that. There’s almost never any urgency in the human characters and by god there is in this one. The monster action in this one was sparse but really well done. The pyrotechnics are going crazy in this one. Mechagodzilla is such a simple stupid concept but he’s one of my favorite Godzilla monsters because it’s the simple trope of “I’m you but betterer” mechagodzilla has laser eyes, finger and toe missles, a chest laser, a full body shield he can deploy if he spins his head around really fast, along with what I’m interpreting as a rail canon because he sinks some big metal spikes through Godzilla at one point. Godzilla himself gets pretty messed up in this movie, spraying blood from his neck, getting stabbed a bunch, blown up, thrown around, knocked over it’s interesting to see a monster actually put up a fight. King Caesar is the new monster for this movie and he’s… fine. Little too goofy looking for my taste (though not as goofy as the next monster we’ll be seeing in the next movie) he has big old dog ears that are flapping about and it’s clear the suit is very light because he’s very very maneuverable Caesar is a very fast moving but All around weak feeling monster. The one cool thing he can do is take an energy beam from Mechagodzilla in one of his eyes and then fire it back out from the other eye. He only gets to do this a couple of times because mecha wises up and stops shooting at him directly but it’s cool that he can do that.
The aliens in this movie are fucking gorilla people which is unexpected. We had one movie where they were just humans but from space, one movie where they are actually just cockroaches wearing human disguises, and now they’re just gorilla people. It’s fine just unexpected when the first one takes enough damage to reveal he’s a gorilla under all that skin it sure is a surprise. Overall I think that this is a really good one.
OH I almost forgot for a little bit there Godzilla is evil again, he straight up breaks anguirus‘ jaw like King Kong at one point with proper gore. It’s later revealed that this was actually Mechagodzilla in disguise but for a brief moment there it is shocking to see Godzilla is evil again after being the “savor of the world” for so many movies.
