On one hand this gave me so much of what I love about these historical epics, the sets, costumes, and great performances all around, but on the other I can’t help but feel it fell a bit short. The script unfortunately wasn’t anything to write home about and I was definitely feeling the lengthy runtime. Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman headed this and I loved them both, especially when they were on screen together, their chemistry was one of the best things about this movie. Speaking of that, like I said, the costumes, set pieces, and the visual technique here are all amazing. Basically every other shot held something beautiful I could appreciate and I really love that about a movie. I also really liked all the Rasputin stuff, Tom Baker was great there, I will now imagine him every time I hear that name. The ending was brutal but I thought that was very well done too, I’ve heard this story before but it still somehow caught me by surprise. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie like this end in such a way as this did and that’s far from an insult. My second Franklin J. Schaffner film may not have been anywhere near as good as the first but it still serves very effectively as the historical epic it is. I’m excited to see more of his work because so far I’ve had a very good time.

This is the best movie about the Romanovs that I have ever seen! I am (and forever will be) obsessed with the Romanov dynasty and especially with the the last imperial family (mostly OTMA), I find their story fascinating and tragic and I have spent so many hours reading and searching everything I can find about them (as a result I feel a strong connection with this family). So, I have seen many documentaries and movies but nothing comes close to this...I don't even know where to start...First of all this film has an incredible, super talented and suprising famous cast (Laurence Olivier was the biggest suprise!), the sets, the costumes and the music steal the show with how grand and magnificent they are! It is probably one of the last films of it's kind- those huge productions with a thousand extras that feel epic and very well done. I loved the actor who played Nicholas,he looked so much like him and he also managed to portrayed him as a great father and husband (giving him humanity and recognizing his virtues) but at the same time it was clear that he was not capable for the position that he was put in and made terrible decisions...All the other actors were also perfectly cast! (The only problem I had was Alexei I didn't like the performance a lot and I hated the way that they portrayed him) The DETAILS, the mention of not very famous but important people, the fact that they show both sides without ignoring the problems that everyone was dealing with and of course the subtle way that the whole story was handled, made this immediately one of my favourite films! Last but not least I would like to say that I understand that this movie is not for everyone,if you don't care that much about the story or the Romanovs in particular this movie is not for you because it's really long and really slow, with many details and scenes that most people will find boring and irritating. But if you are like me I think that you will enjoy it a lot!!!

watched this in school, kind of slow but there’s no other way to do this story without it being sort of slow (plus all political movies are kind of slow always). the last act was good and the costume design was GREAT. that’s all i have to say
