I don’t know why this movie had such a low rating, it is by no means a bad movie and deserves at least a low 3.
I think the main turnoff is just how silly and outlandish it is being a caveman turned soccer pros plot but it actually handles it pretty well. This concept is just so easy to like, even with overall subpar characters this movie is able to get us really involved in this world and believe in it.
Like I said not the best of characters but of course Dug is still written well, he is simple yet represents modern man in such a mature way, showing the ups and downs we all go through as people. He didn’t change much from the beginning but he was grown from the start, what I like is they left the growing for the side cast of cavemen, showing is more than one can change.
The comedy is decent, this style of physical comedy isn’t the best for me but it gets cartoony enough to give me a good laugh or two. I especially liked the Hog who of course was important to the story but just as much paramount to the enjoyment and fun of this movie.
Obviously I feel great about the animation, although Aardman seems to be stuck on this style any claymation is brilliant and I will always be ready for it.
The atmosphere is there and great too, I loved the idea of the valley and the badlands just as much, so much vibrance yet so much horror in both places and I could get lost in it.
Not much wrong with this movie it is just a bit simple in structure and premise making it very good for the general public which explains the low letterboxd rating. All around a great little stopmotion watch and puts you in a good mood.
