There are moments of this film that really shine, and I like themes a lot, but boy does it drag in the middle. I started this with no idea of the plot, and at around the 45 minute mark, I found myself still unsure. I kept thinking, “Surely, Howard will have a larger role in this,” but I don’t think he’s even mentioned after the first scene until over an hour in. Mary Steenburgen, on the other hand, has a pretty substantial role, and is far and away the best aspect of the film. So, when she gets sidelined later on, the film becomes far less interesting.
The movie is ultimately about a man who is incapable making good decisions, who must eventually come to terms with his lot in life, and this only becomes clear after watching the whole thing. I do I have to give it credit for landing a strong finish however. And the journey to that finish is pretty charming all the way through.
