“You’ve drugged me!”

*I had no idea that Karen Black played Mother Firefly in House of 1000 Corpses (2003), but I was pleasantly surprised by her performance. We didn’t see much of her in Rob Zombie’s film, so it was great to see her starring in this. (I’ve also never really thought to dig through her filmography.) The first short film in this trilogy was awesome, I love a feminist piece, but are we not concerned that she was going around messing with high school boys? It was a different time but I cant get behind that if it saved my life. The second film, “Millicent and Therese,” was pretty bad. Not to be that guy, but it was predicable since the first couple minutes. I don’t feel like putting a spoiler on my review, so I won’t say what happened, but we all knew the twist right off the bat. The final short film was the best out of the three, even though it was QUITE racist, the puppetry was sick as hell. I loved it.

Story #1What the hell was that first one? I’m assuming these get better, and while the story was told in a serviceable way, it’s insane how no one is commenting on the fact that they explicitly state that it wasn’t the boy’s fault for…drugging and kidnapping her? Are we so for real right now??

Story #2The second story is less worrisome, albeit incredibly predictable. It tries to draw itself out, but is ultimately undone by the mistake of visibly using the same actress. It’s campy and fun, but eye-rollingly silly, especially as someone who has researched dissociative identity disorder and has had friends with the condition.

Story #3The final story in the anthology is the real one worth watching - I can see why this terrified people back in the day! Karen Black really shows off her acting chops in what turns out to be a really excellent low budget horror short film. It’s simple, but executed well and fun to watch on top of it; almost hilariously so. It’s a perfect mix of scary and funny, making it a great watch for people who want both. Fun stuff!

OverallDumb as rocks, but ultimately a fun time due solely to that last story. I recommend skipping the first two and just checking out the one that everyone is here for and remembers, unless you’re a big fan of Karen Black, which is honestly understandable - she grew on me!

a made for TV segment/anthology styled horror movie. i have a hatred for anthology style horror, as usually the qualities very uneven, and due to the short segments it doesn’t often build up to anything. i would like to say this one has to be one of my favourites of the subgenre so far. the 72 minute runtime, plus 3 stories for 25 minutes is good as the problem with the V/H/S film is there’s too many short segments, for a run time really long. this was short and snappy plus the stories are actually intriguing (unlike V/H/S obviously) just like every other anthology film, there’s so much uneven quality here, for example i liked  the first film, and i loved the unhinged nature of the 3rd film but the second one is just borderline forgettable, and seems like a filler story with a weird plot and a bad conclusion. to go in more depth with the 3rd story : it’s great, and i think this film would benefit bu. just being revolved around that one story. a possessed doll follows a woman around her house, a perfect balance of suspense and action as she gets hunter by the creepy looking doll. this is really just proto type chucky, and the killer doll subgenre is a really fun one. karen black’s portrayal of the characters really made this film for me, and the teacher in the first segment was a true girlboss. there’s a couple dated effects, but all in all this is a really fun horror which brings a new perspective to the genre
