I’m currently watching OG Dragon Ball from beginning to end for the first time (in sub). Articles online said to watch this movie after episode 40-something, however I looked at the synopsis and I can’t see why I can’t watch it after finishing the Pilaf arc (unless maybe this movie was released around that time of the episode??).
So this movie is a retelling of the Pilaf arc, except take out Pilaf and his gang, replace him with a (kinda) competent Red Ribbon Army, and a villain with lots of potential but ends up losing unceremoniously. I found King Gurumes’s hunger as his motivation to be very interesting, and I even think that the way he loses is actually pretty unique for this franchise - but c’mon, let Goku and the crew throw some punches at him.
Although the remastering/restoration of the series on Crunchyroll is kinda bad, this actually looked pretty decent. The night time sequences did look a bit overly saturated, but often times didn’t look that bad.
While Dragon Ball Daima is out, I find it so interesting how that show is lifting references from other Dragon Ball media. But I can’t tell if Pansy from this movie was used as a reference for Panzy in Daima, or if this is a “Krillin’s daughter has the same name as his ex” situation.

Basically just a condensed version of the first arc but Oolong doesn't get to wish for panties :(

The 4 movies of original Dragon Ball is really the only dragon ball media I have not experienced. I have tried watching this movie multiple times before but the retelling of the show taking up half the movie and the different cast then what I am used to always turns me off. Finally I decided I'm going to watch these 4 movies and for the first one it’s not bad but not great either. Definitely feels like Pilaf arc cut down to 50 min with either a retread of scenes from the show or characters replaced with less likable versions of their show/manga counterparts.

This was JUST alright. This acts as a recap of some of the earlier episodes in the Dragon Ball. I recommend watching the anime first and then watching this for fun.
