I love this movie so much, I could watch it again and again and I did as a kid. This is not a good Godzilla movie by any means it’s probably one of the weaker ones but i don’t care I love this one. The 70’s clothes, the 70’s hair, the 70’s future technology, the 70’s music, the 70’s lack of music in some scenes leading to them being brilliantly awkward and weird, it’s perfect. Godzilla is unmistakably a good guy in this one treated as if he was actually a super hero. This medicine even had a super hero robot who’s very ultra man like. Jet jaguar is my favorite Godzilla ally of all time no question. He’s in one movie (this one) is just so clearly drawn and designed by a child and it is absolutely perfect. Megalon is a big beetle boy and he’s just full of whimsy, he’s just hopping along jumping all over the place making funny little hand gestures with his drills, has the same energy attack as Ghidorah which helps out a lot in the scenes where they reuse footage of Ghidorah shooting his beams because they didn’t have the budget to build scale cities, and he can shoot little fire grenades from his mouth. Gigan also shows up in this one so they could reuse footage from Godzilla vs Gigan and lot on this one. In fact there’s a lot of reused footage mostly because this movie was shot in like 15 days or something crazy so if they needed inserts they just took them from different movies, I counted at least two movies being reused but I’m sure there is more. The scene of Godzilla jumping into the water is from Ebrah and it’s not even subtle. The lighting is totally different and Godzilla’s appearance is completely and utterly different. Godzilla’s kind of cute in this movie, they made his eyes all big and has very expressive with his hands. He’ll make little hand signals to jet jaguar, shake jet jaguar’s hand, even at one point jet and him and back to back trying to stay away from a ring of fire and each of them has one hand on the other. They both act so human in this movie is laughable.
For a long time as a kid this was my favorite one not because it’s good but because for me as a child, teenager, and adult even this was the perfect blend of a movie being competently made but just lacking any self awareness as stone dumb it all is. I love the human cast, I couldn’t tell you their names at all but that goes for all of these movies beyond the first one. The two gay dads and their child are all great, oh sorry they’re not gay but they’re very… very close friends so they’re gay in my eyes. Megalon is really goofy and only in this movie which is a crime because he’s so funny. This movie has so much nostalgia charm for me and it’s still a fun time. Godzilla has his famous drop kick in this one which is a godsend that it was even an idea that had any Merritt, and yet it made it to the Final Cut of the movie thank god. I owened the “video treasures” VHS of this and still do but for this viewing I decided to rent the fully remaster HD remaster and man that only added to the charm. Seeing tiny action figure statue whatever jet jaguar flying through the air with all the strings attached in crystal clear 1080p was something I didn’t know I needed to see but I’m so glad I did.
I love this movie it’s terrible and one of the weaker Godzilla’s but god damn is it really charming.
