Absolutely brilliant piece of cosmic horror. It’s such a shame that David Prior hasn't done more horror stuff, because AM1200 and the Empty Man are some of my favorite horror projects of the 21st century.
Great sound design and camerawork. The transition from the map to the road (which is also seen in The Empty Man) is really cool. I think I'm just a sucker for horror environments that make the main character feel alone, both physically and spiritually. That shit just gets to me. You can feel Sam's increasing desperation plaguing him and his surroundings. The scares are quite effective too.
Clear parallels here to The Empty Man - most notably the "you transmit we receive" line. Both deal with an indifferent universe where humans are transmitters for incomprehensible Lovecraftian beings. Although the entity in this case is more physically fleshed out than in the Empty Man. We see its eyes and mouth as it prepares to consume the electrical engineer whom Sam kills. The entity preys on those who are vulnerable to its influences; the evangelists and former radio station workers are prime examples. Sam himself is extremely guilty that he indirectly caused the suicide of his coworker (shoutout to Ray Wise - great performance here reminiscient of Leland from Twin Peaks)
Overall, such a great short film that's directly up my alley
