Film #5 of 39 in the Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema Criterion Collection
To Joy is a strong early Bergman film with a very engaging story. Following the relationship and marriage between Stig and Marta is both interesting characters, even though Stig is often arrogant, selfish, and impossible to sympathize with - which makes the consequences of his behavior feel completely deserved.
To me the music is one of the film’s greatest strengths. It fits perfectly with the emotions in the story. The acting performances work very well, and the tension between the main characters keeps the film interesting throughout.
Overall, To Joy feels like a stable and confident work from Bergman. It doesn’t reach the absolute top level of his career, but it is still a very well-made and memorable film.
