“you’re shaking! ITS MY PUSSY!”
a french body horror about a vegetarian girl who’s goes to veterinary school and has a desire for flesh. this is a body horror, so obviously i’m gonna love it no matter what, but i’ve got to say this is by far one my favourites of all time just for its general really interesting, original premise. it uses the coming of age trope and truly flips it on its head, using cannibalism and a thirst for blood as a metaphor for sexual awakening of a young girl and discovering identity, the main character performs in a ritual by eating a rabbit kidney, gains a purple rash all throughout her body and suddenly has a ravenous appetite for raw meat. while this obviously uses body horror plus gore to its advantage, it’s honestly just so much more than that. it’s true visceral thrill comes from the psychological and emotional disturbance, the ‘shocking’ or ‘gory’ scenes all create a mood of true repulsion, constant biting of flesh, itching of rashes and coughing up hair. the cinematography and actual aesthetic of this film is brilliant, the director has a very distinct style is very confident with his direction and the tone of the movie, as well as garance marillier absolutely killing the role of the girl who cosumes flesh, and slowly leads into an animalistic descent of killing her roomate. the gruesomeness of this film perfectly fits the black, unconventional comedy throughout. this is a one time experience, and i’ve never seen something like this. this film has so much depth and has many themes of dark family secrets and sexual desire, it’s an addictive film from start to end. this film is definitely a hard watch for many, as it fights themes seen more ‘taboo’ and generally uncomfortable to watch: this has plenty of visceral blood that really fits the themes of cannibalism. this isn’t your conventional body horror, but i’m so glad i watched this. i’ve noticed a trend where european horror seems to be so much more raw than american, and this just completely proves that:
