I’m a sucker for these classic movie musicals and I haven’t been as good at watching new ones in recent years but “Gypsy” has re-ignited that fire in me!
I loved it! I went in completely blind minus the iconic finale number. It was so fun watching the journey that Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood took their characters on and I loved the dry humor and constant buzz of jokes and jabs (especially from Mama Rose).
I understand that this does have a longer runtime and that some feel like it can be boring in parts, but I saw this in a full theater where the technicolor popped off screen on a Sunday afternoon with nothing else to do. The best way to watch a classic movie!
The blessing of Gypsy is the plethora of recordings and pro shoots of amazing actresses chewing the scenery in their interpretation of Mama Rose. I can’t wait to go watch Patti, Bette, and Imelda give their spin on it!
In another world, it would’ve been amazing to see Angela Lansbury be Mama Rose in this movie. Did she have to choose between this and Manchurian Candidate? Who knows??
P.S. Can you imagine Abby Lee Miller as Mama Rose, complete with wheelchair?!? Maybe when Audra is ready to step down from the role, Abby can “roll” into it!!
