It takes more than a set of balls to make a man

From the first frame it immerses you in this vibrant culture so much and so well. I loved that ending. And I really like the message and the pretty big issue the film tackles well. However I’ll say there are times the main conflict gets kind of lost in all of the cultural immersion which made it slightly harder to truly fall in love with it. But regardless I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Near the end, Sanata says, "Hope gives birth to courage... Women's hope." It reminded me of Fiona Apple's response to a fan, where she said, "There’s always hope for women. We are hope. We are the hope in the world.”

One uttered in a Senegalese film from 2004, the other by an American singer in 2019. Across time and location and culture, women are connected by this man-made beast of sex-based oppression. And, more than that, we are connected by our will to be free.

Of course, added to my on: radical feminism list. Even the animals here have more freedom.

يحكي الفيلم قصة إمرأة حرة شريفة في قرية ما، رفضت ان يتم "تطهير" إبنتها على الرغم من كل ما تعرضت له من ضرب وتهديد وقسوة الا انها لا تريد لإبنتها ان تمر بما مرت به، تلجأ إليها اربع طِفلات ويتوسلنّ لها لتحميهن من "التطهير"، ومن خلال القصة ومجرياتها ترى كمية الظلم الذي تعاني منه النساء في مثل هذه المجتمعات، سواء من خلال ختانهن أو سلب حريتهن في التعبير والاختيار، أو تزويج القاصرات وغيرها من القضايا..

إختلطت مشاعري بين حزن وغضب وصدمة، عمل رائع، السينما الافريقية لا تخلوا من الواقعية والجمال
