Woke up at 5 AM and couldn't go back to bed so I figured eh why not just watch a random movie. Can't even remember how I landed on this, wasn't even on my watch list but I am very glad I did.

Macabre but also whimsical stop motion movie about groups of woodland creatures feuding over a religious icon who really should be consulted in all this but isn't. A labour of love that took 13 years to make by a single individual (exception of the phenomenal music I think). Singular and personal while still being open to interpretation on all the classic things we see in folk stories. It's dreamy and creepy all at the same time. Definitely one that will need multiple viewings but I am fulfilled with the vibes I got off this so far.

This isn't for everyone, definitely can see it falling into that "well it's artsy but what's the point camp" for a lot of people but hey! This is kind of my jam in many ways, dark sense of mythology, eerie stop motion, the opportunity to take a deep dive and make sense of it all or just enjoy the vibe, it just kinda made me happy. I think that's all that really needs to count. Might have to make this a mandatory Halloween watch.

Christiane Cegavske spent 13 years making this stop-motion film essentially alone and it shows in the best possible way. this is what happens when one person's very specific and slightly unhinged vision goes completely unchecked and i mean that with full respect
the story is told almost entirely through movement and atmosphere and it works completely. it's slow and ritualistic and a little hypnotic
it has a dark fairy tale energy but genuinely unsettling, closer to the grimm originals before they got cleaned up. not for everyone but if this is your thing it really is your thing
the result is one of the most visually singular animated films ever made. the dedication alone is staggering
