Hard to rate this one for now, and I’m mainly going to use this to dump quite a lot of thoughts about Gorillaz.
Demon Days is one of my favourite albums, and is one of the two or three main albums that “got me into music”. Demon Days and Plastic Beach are obviously the best Gorillaz albums (the newer stuff isn’t bad by any means, Song Machine is great, but they aren’t the same quality as the older stuff, Humanz is a mixed bag and Cracker Island/The Now Now are decent), but one thing I do think has improved is the live shows. Seeing them back in 2022, I way preferred those renditions of El Mañana and Last Living Souls, those are the ones that stick with me (this is vindicated by rewatching any versions of the newer tours). There is just something off about the performances pre-the comback (the Escape to Plastic Beach Tour ones are still pretty good though) that just doesn’t sit right, and maybe it was the fact this hasn’t really been remastered video or sound wise even on the iTunes version, but still. I didn’t dislike it at any times, I was happy and it allowed me to relive how essential this album was to 14-year old me. DARE is quite funny in this like everyone else says, but I still danced. I would love if they did a tour of this again though for the 20 year anniversary with maybe an hour or so afterwards of the other stuff (I could go for a recreation of all of Plastic Beach’s music as well instead) with the better, new live versions of the track in the bigger arenas. The best tracks of the original album are El Mañana, November Has Come and if I had to pick a third I would be in-between Dirty Harry, but I’d also want to shout out the more obscure Fire Coming out of the Monkey’s Head, it’s the closet thing we have gotten to a modern day Listening Wind. Obviously Stop Making Sense is still the best concert film out there, I am in the mood for watching/re-watching some other ones though!
Demon Days ranking (studio versions):1. El Mañana2. November Has Come3. Dirty Harry4. Fire Coming out of the Monkey’s Head5. Feel Good Inc.6. O Green World7. Every Planet We Reach Is Dead8. Kids with Guns9. All Alone10. DARE11. Don’t Get Lost in Heaven12. Last Living Souls13. Demon Days14. White Light15. Intro
