this felt so real it was almost uncomfortable at times.
i loved adam sandler’s performance. the way he expressed everything in a passive-aggressive way, made so much sense considering everything he went through as a kid. i also loved the piano scenes and his relationship with his daughter.
ben stiller’s character kind of annoyed me at first, but seeing him try to get close with his family again made me sympathize with him. and honestly with all of them and their dynamic.
it was hard to watch the way the dad treated danny and jean, how distant and unfair he was…… i mean he couldn’t even listen to them, like danny was trying to say something to him, and he would change the subject and keep talking about himself.
and that moment at the end when matthew realizes the story his dad always told was wrong. he said they made the piece together, the one named after matthew, but it was actually about danny. danny was the one who was there for him all along…. that really got me.
finally, i liked how the film gave space to each member of the family, showing their perspective in each part.
the only thing i didn’t like… the daughter’s films. what was that.
