SOOOOO much better than the first Annabelle. Even though this is pretty slow at points, I still really enjoyed it because it is a film that is filled to the brim with set pieces, not to mention it has a wicked opening and a wicked ending. I mean this thing is fun to watch just because it moves around so much in such a confined area. You wouldn’t think a mostly single location film would be able to pull off having the amount of set pieces this movie has but it does and it’s great. There’s plentiful amounts of jumpscares, there’s mysterious rooms that are forbidden to go in, there’s a scary ass scarecrow that compliments the evilness of Annabelle, there’s a lore drop scene that gives more insight into the creation of Annabelle, and of course there is a gory scene that took me by surprise that includes a shot of a character ripped in half/bleeding out. On top of all of that, the opening scene is an AMAZING fucking way to start off the movie because it’s just so shocking and so jarring. And then of course the ending connects this to the first movie in a brilliant way that quite utterly made my jaw drop. This isn’t a perfect movie by any means, but it is fun, it follows a certain formula, and it executes that formula pretty well. I like the cinematography and production design, I like Sandberg’s direction even if it’s a little bit by the book, and at the end of the day, this is a much better film than whatever that first movie was. By the way, I was happy to see BOTH Annabelle dolls make an appearance in this. I was also happy that there was a lot more Annabelle screen time in this than there was in the first one.
