Trigger warning with this one as it is Not an easy film to sit through, with a quite brutal gang assault scene, that although heard more than scene, remains quite jarring.

Cage is hero cop and widower John Dromoor who meets single mom (and widow) Teena (Anna Hutchison) at a bar. There are some sparks, but nothing eventuates. Some time later Teena and her daughter Bethie (Talitha Bateman) are ambushed by four men while walking home, Teena brutally assaulted then left for dead, with Bethie as traumatised witness. Cage is first on the scene, apprehends the perpetrators with brave testimony from Bethie, but ultimate justice is complicated when slick criminal lawyer Don Johnson is hired. Perhaps justice needs to be found away from the court room…

While Cage is given ample screen time, this film adapted from a novel by Joyce Carol Oates with a title that will get me shadow banned if I dare mentioned it, spends a fair amount of time with the two victims, and both Hutchison and Bateman are effective in handling really difficult material. The court room scene goes a long way in exposing the absolutely horrific treatment of sexual assault victims within the legal system. It’s equal parts heartbreaking and engaging and the fucking judge more concerned with correct grammar than actual justice will having you wishing Cage would add him to the list of revenge targets.

Just about the most detached I've ever seen Cage (and the most dye in his hair). The movie is sorely missing him when he's on screen, the only other person with any charisma was Don Johnson in a surprisingly decent role, though the courtroom depiction borders on parody. Nobody else has the acting chops to prop up this drama, leaving it ultra dull.
The ending is borderline confounding, Cage is being set up as a Batman/Equalizer crossover and he has a legit Batman/Jim Gordon moment at the end, it just feels super out of place with Johnson riding off on his motorcycle like a badass. Such a tonedeaf scene but the only one that had me sitting up and paying steadfast attention.
