Depois de terminar a segunda temporada de True Detective, procurei outros trabalhos de Vince, até por que ele foi o que mais me surpreendeu na série, e aqui ele surpreende mais uma vez. Ele dá vida a uma pessoa tão brutal... Mas que foi capaz de fazer eu torcer por ele em meio a toda violência que ele causou, cada osso quebrado tem um intuito... Ele foi capaz de transcender o estado da violência, transformando ela em uma justificativa completamente plausível, visando a segurança daqueles que ele ama, algo dificílimo de fazer considerando o QUANTO tudo violento é. Vince Vaughn subiu muito no meu conceito.

I mean, like, god damn. Zahler obviously doesn't have a large body of work, but from the two Ive seen... quickly became an absolute essential (if not my favorite) in 21st century exploitation. Absolutely gnarly, and totally engrossing stuff here -- time flies by in this gutter-trash descent to hell.

Fuck the prison industrial complex. Fuck corrupt cops & prison guards. America exists not for the good that people do, or the struggling who wish for a better life -- but for for the rich & powerful, no matter how they achieve it.

High-key fuck the abortion stuff though. I don't buy into the "Zahler is alt-right" belief personally (probably a social-libertarian imo), but man the abortion stuff here felt gross & shameful. At its core though, this is totally an exploitation flick, and since when was exploitation unproblematic?

This isn’t about jail as much as it is Hell, and what happens when the only way to seek salvation is by giving into the worst parts and tendencies of yourself. I’ve talked myself into liking it more so after the fact, although in the moment I don’t know if I necessarily appreciated everything that was happening.
