“you think you made me? It was me that made you, sweetheart. My face! who are you? cameras, lights, lens. The only thing that you ever had was me, my face!”
i just absolutely adore the distinctive vibe of this, the colourful late 60s, and i just love the atmosphere of it. it’s campy costumes and jazzy score really add to the offbeat vintage charm of this, and those british accents were actually amazing, like yes we need more of this!!! this film is highly graphic for its time, it’s tame today but it’s a really progressive horror classic which was ahead of its time, a model gets her face smashed with a light and her husband goes around killing young women to perform a surgery to make his wife beautiful again, its whacky concepts and suspenseful editing style really add together and it’s a uniquely premised, murder mystery/serial killer styled proto slasher which is backed up by swinging 60s fashion and constant colour, plus a nostalgic sound and memorable visual style. it’s unhinged performances from multiple members of the cast are brilliant : peter cushing being a standout as a surgeon who slowly descends into madness and ruthlessness as he kills a bunch of young girls, he plays an intense role as while he is a murderer - he is horrified by his deeds and monstrosities and it’s clear he feels a sense of regret. sue lloyd, who plays his girlfriend who becomes disfigured at the start of the film is another twister role. she’s the ultimate masterminds and pushes her boyfriend to murder more women to maintain her beauty, she’s obsessed over he looks and is incredibly vain - in a cold, sociopathic way. the films ends off just as bizarre as when it stated - a bunch of british thugs invade into their home, definitely not a closure i was expecting but the general over the top nature puts a smile on my face. the tone is highly consistent - this just doesn’t make sense in a lot of ways and it struggles to keep the horror element for the entirety, also it’s clearly a low production as some special effects weren’t the best.
