“you people lived way too long!”
“do you think you are a killer?”
“bitch! i am a minister of death!”
third film of the year (yeah i know it’s the 18th lmao, i just completely forgot to log anything for two weeks) i’ve watched about five movies in the new year and it’s probably just because i’ve been busy or just generally lacked motivation, but one thing i made sure i watched was the freeway sequel, which is infamous for being even crazier than the already unhinged 1996 exploitation film starring reece witherspoon. this time, instead of little red riding hood (a girl escaping from the foster care system, and going through a road trip with a psychopath) and this time, it’s clearly more of a hansel and gretel type story, with two girls (one being a serial killer, the other being a prostitute) both escape jail and go through america committing crimes, then fleeing to mexico. knowing natasha lyonne was in it was the biggest reason i wanted to watch this, but im really glad i did, because it may even be better than the original. while the first film was almost kinda mainstream-leaning, this one truly does not give a fuck: and instead this is a totally low-budget, purely exploitative movie that thrives on shock, plus extremely crude, gross-out humour. it’s a nightmarish adaptation on the fairytale, with puke galore and cannibalistic witches, both lead actresses are highly charismatic and energetic, playing two women addicted to crime, who both eventually have a homoerotic relationship, and of course vincent gallo: playing the grotesque witch. it’s very john waters adjacent, as it truly does not care. rampant drug use, transgressive violence and sexuality, plus also using bulimia as a form of dark humour. it’s offensive (with questionable portrayals of eating disorders, and gender identity) but is also honestly just wildly entertaining, and totally my thing.
