I don’t even know where to start with this. This movie was… certainly something. William Holden was supposed to be a 25 year old but looked more like 45. They kept feeling the need to find elaborate plot points just so he could take his shirt off. But unlike a lot of sexual innuendo during Hayes code era Hollywood, it just made it incredibly awkward and was so very unnecessary. I get that Kim Novak is not supposed to be the bright one, but the way her characters story plays out in the end just made me question why I decided to give two hours of my life to this film. I think had they kept Paul Newman as Hal this would’ve been so so much better. Old Hollywood pairing old men with 20 something women will never not drive me mad. This had so much potential and between the age thing, the weird shirtless bits, and the weird plot post the picnic drove this from what could’ve been a 4 to a 2.5-3.
