Maybe Finnick Odair's death wasn't that sad after all.
I just had one of those movie nights where you have a watchlist stuffed with films, but you somehow stumble onto something random and click it. I was already ten minutes in before I noticed it was a Jennifer Kent film. As someone who was definitely not a fan of The Babadook, I felt immediately skeptical but still committed to the decision.
My God. The Nightingale is one of the hardest watches I’ve ever gone through. This film is raw, brutally showing some of the most cynical things humans have done to one another. You need a heavy stomach for this watch, and even then, you might need a couple of breaks. I felt like I was being choked by this film.
A large part of that is due to Aisling Franciosi. She is powerful with her presence here. Quite frankly, she is this film. I felt her emotion, her pain, her loss, her anguish. Respectfully, she shits on all the other 2019 Best Actress nominees (Yalitza Aparicio, you’re chill tho). She has her brilliant, loud scenes fueled by emotions like fear and ire, but it’s in the nuanced moments where this performance truly comes together. Her eyes do so much of the work here. I also have to mention how unbelievable Sam Claflin is in this role. I would’ve loved to see him meet Ramsay Bolton in another universe
To get a performances like that, you need a good director. Jennifer Kent completely squashed all my preconceived opinions about her. This film is fantastic. It’s shot brilliantly, giving you an overwhelming, almost suffocating feeling through the aspect ratio. The story, the color grading, everything about it just worked for me.
This is a heavy watch, and one I’ll never return to tbh, but it’s also one I’ll never forget.
