Sicario: Day of the Soldado isn't as good as its predecessor, but all things considered it's not bad, either. While I enjoyed seeing Alejandro and Matt again, I would've liked more scenes with them both, because their sarcastic-versus-serious dynamic was great but underutilised. The plot wasn't as gripping, and around halfway through it did feel like the story started dragging a bit. For me, the cinematography was also a little bit lacking, especially compared to the precious film, though the soundtrack was still good. Benicio and Josh Brolin gave brilliant performances once again, and most of the supporting cast did very well, too, although I wasn't a huge fan of Isabela Merced's acting. All in all, like I said previously, the Sicario films aren't necessarily what I usually prefer, but I might come back to them in the future, and I'm excited to see where the story takes Alejandro and Matt in the next film.

benicio del toro feels like the angel of death. ruthless and competent, nothing stands in his way. easily the highlight of soldado, his presence commands the scene every time he appears. 

I found the plot interesting though a bit unsure of where it would lead to. the trigger for soldado in the opening scene caught my attention, but the actual retaliation of the US felt half baked. so many things went wrong, and they explain this through its covert nature, but there doesn’t seem to be enough thought and planning put into their execution. even when our “heroes” go back to lick their wounds and recover, they don’t do anything meaningful to adapt and make up for their failures. 

the movie was slick though, great at creating and maintaining tension throughout the runtime. however, the more i think about the actual events of the story, the more confused i am on what soldado was trying to achieve.

EDIT: admittedly, i was dumb and watched this thinking it was the one made by denis villenueve. imagine my surprise when the credits rolled and i saw a different name. and now that i've seen the original, i feel like this was definitely a step down. soldado doesn't feel like it meaningfully continues the themes explored in sicario, choosing to revel more in the darkness and violence of the world. it lacks the depth of the original, and it's probably due to the lack of emily blunt or someone to provide a sense of morality to the whole thing.

As "Sicario 2: Day for the Soldado" it will never live up to the first installment due to what Villeneuve was able to do with it.

However, as "Soldado" its a good dark action film that doesnt shy away from the meaner aspects taht most straight up action films do.
