This film is just fine, every story element is kept pretty surface level, nothing is great or terrible just ok. I think the makeup and prosthetics used to make everyone look older at the end of the film was good and the performances throughout where also decent. Im not sure how this film won best picture being an overall safe and just fine film.

This is a movie about race relations that goes below the speed limit. There are a few occasional mishaps that are forgotten about. Two major moments of this are when Hoke and Daisy are in Alabama, where Hoke is racially profiled. This bears no effect on the story, barely tying into the Martin Luther King Jr. storyline. Another example is when it's revealed that the Jewish Temple was bombed. Both of these events happen without any consequences for the story or their "friendship".

The movie has some decent moments with good dialogue that drive it forward, but otherwise, moments expected to resonate fade without impact. It's like they are trying to steer away from any major conflict between Hoke and Daisy, and decide to find the most basic conclusions. It makes sense why this movie did well at the Oscars. It tackles serious topics without becoming too controversial. It's not as bad as Paul Haggis' Crash, and again, it is a competently made film with some beautiful cinematography and great makeup, but if you want to watch a movie about race relations from 1989, watch Do the Right Thing.
