Touko Laaksonen, a decorated officer, returns home after a harrowing and heroic experience serving his country in World War II, but life in Finland during peacetime proves equally distressing. He finds peace-time Helsinki rampant with persecution of the homosexual and men around him even being pressured to marry women and have children. Touko finds refuge in his liberating art, specialising in homoerotic drawings of muscular men, free of inhibitions. His work – made famous by his signature ‘Tom of Finland’ – became the emblem of a generation of men and fanned the flames of a gay revolution.

Tom of Finland
It is still very distressing seeing the HIV/AIDS section of these historical dramas. And even more depressing how we're regressing to that era in terms of legislation and censorship.

Fantastic film and thank you for all the leather daddies featured. Thank you, Tom.

Starts of strong then gets very very slow. However I cannot rate it under 3 stars because theres a very good chance that this film convincing me that my cough is actually throat cancer is going to make me go to the doctor and get tested for throat cancer.

Incredibly eye opening but occasionally lacks emotion where moments could be savoured. Over all however, an interesting watch, a great story, very hot but sweet in parts and a celebration of gay sexuality before anyone dared to do so.

I have a confession to make regarding biopics. I absolutely love when they show you original footage at the end of the film (a cliché device, I know) but it makes me so happy to see what the people were really like and how well the actors nailed their performances (or didn't). To be honest, I would have loved to have seen a little bit more at the end of 'Tom of Finland', but that's just me and my weird mind. For those who are interested, 'Tom of Finland' is a very well-crafted biopic that delivers on all its promises, and I would be very happy to see it take out an Oscar.
