I find with a lot of Jacques Demy films particularly Lola that they seem to conclude as what we’d determine to be a happy ending, but something is always restraining that transparency as a viewer (not a bad thing, by the way). You’re presented with a character like Lola, who is admired by each of the three men, and naturally you build a fondness and feel like the ball is in your court as to which man should truly end up with her. But what we’re left with doesn’t quite give us that comfortability.
Much like The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, it leaves a kind of distaste not because it fails, but because what you’d expect to happen actually doesn’t work out. Demy quietly manipulates that sense of romantic expectation while still remaining deeply romantic simultaneously . The result is something that feels both sincere and elusive, giving you the shape of a happy ending without ever fully letting you settle into it.I almost dread the ending of a Jacques Demy film for the pure reason that my heart will be left slightly shattered.
