honestly? i liked it. not without its faults but it doesn't scream religious propaganda. i'm more interested in character study rather than bible study so this works quite well for me.

jesus slop usually butcheres mary's character but it's nice to see the story we've already seen 30000 times from her perspective although it still feels like a jesus film, not mary film.

i also have to admit i find joaquin phoenix hot only when he plays jesus but i might dissect that with my therapist

Hate to give a movie about mary magdalene a low rating but it was just pretty dull. Her story here was like ehh.. probably one of my least fav interpretations of her. Really enjoyed that she witnessed the kiss from Judas though. She had no clue what judas was doing and was just happy to witness it. (Judas and peter were very cute here! but didnt enjoy much of jesus either) Really enjoy Mary and Judas friendship! But mary kinda just stood around. Also dislike the notes at the end about misconceptions around her being a prostitute, like, we dont care if she was or not, jesus loved her either way. Had some very soft jesus and judas moments before the betrayal which was crazy ass. Wish mary magdalene was a good character at all here but she just wasnt.

Movies who act like you’re supposed to know everything about the bible and how this happened. Please, the version I was taught had songs in it. They failed to differentiate Mary Magdalene and Mother Mary. So this is a bit of a chore to sit through. 

Feeling bad for Tahar Rahim who I will never take seriously in any other movie after Madame Web.
