Bigelow back in true story territory with this horrific case of civil rights abuse.
Will Poulter is a super racist cop, who lays siege to the mostly African American guest saying in a hotel looking for a supposed sniper, amidst riots occurring in already tension filled city of Detroit in the 60s. Among those interrogated are returned soldier Anthony Mackie, Algee Smith as a Motown crooner and Cassie from Skins as an Ohio white girl also staying on premises. John Boyega is a local security guard, draft into the situation, with a view to helping the quote/unquote suspects make it out alive.
Given the attitude of seemingly most in the force, it is amazing that any sort of justice was achieved in this pretty harrowing examination of the racism inherent with police and the wider non-African American society.
Jeremy Strong was cast in this and then fired by Bigelow as the character just wasn't working out. He was recast in a smaller role as a District Attorney. Not a lot of hope with this one, but that is understandable too, given it's true status it can't just be manufactured where such an injustice occurred.
