How this won best picture (and 9 Oscars in total) in 1997 is beyond me. The heartbreaking ending is surprisingly good, and the story has a message I can appreciate, but that does not make up for the serious pacing issue it has. It takes no less than 1 hour to finally get the story started, and even then it takes another hour to actually become interesting. Personally I think it would have been a lot more enjoyable if the entire storyline during WW2 would have been left out and instead we only would have seen the part that takes place in Africa, before the war.
