even if you approach it as it’s own original film it’s still a completely directionless mess. it wants to be dark and gritty and erotic but for whatever reason is too scared to go “too far” in any aspect, so instead of this boundary pushing piece of new queer cinema it comes off more as some softcore cut of a man’s best porno starring balding men pretending to be 16 instead of gangly czech twinks. and as an adaption its an utter abject failure. feels like verow read one third of the book got bored and said fuck it let’s have parker posey kill people. these two movie original characters hold so much more sway over the story than dennis which it completely washes out his character and by extension the whole point of the story. it breaks my heart… or as DC would say, it just kills me. basically do not adapt dennis cooper unless you have god given talent.
